CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Cooperative societies have existed since the early times. That is to say, they began long before the Earth was created. The holy spirits or trimly (God the father, God the son, and God the holy spirit) worked together to bring the world into existence. This was due to a number of things.
Furthermore, at the time of the stone age men and their wonders, collaboration was required. This happened in the agriculture industry since it was confined to family members. After some time, things began to improve, and a community agricultural system was established. This occurred due to a number of circumstances, as well as the necessity for it.
More countries began to work together in commerce, transferring products and services from one country to the next or from one state to the next. Because there is a need for it, certain causes have given rise to it. That is to say, nothing worthwhile can exist without a need for it, or without certain causes that must have led to it, specifically these ones leading to cooperation among people nations. Countries and the globe at large are not for fetching, but rather for satisfying or measuring wants. These elements, as listed in this section's introduction, might be beneficial or negative.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
As previously said, elements that might impact the formation of cooperatives can be good or bad. These characteristics vary from state to state, country to country, and so on. The sort of cooperative or the members participating in its activities is, nevertheless, the most crucial factor.
Many people and academics have attempted to discuss the elements that might impact the formation of cooperatives in recent years. This is due to the fact that a large number of individuals have failed to comprehend what these things are. Rather, people frequently confuse it with intentions. To put it another way, these universes are completely different. The distinction between factors and motives will be discussed later in this project.
However, in the Owerri L.G.A. in Imo State, a number of variables might impact cooperative formation. The elements that impact cooperative creation in Owerri L.G.A Imo state, according to Mr L.M. Ejwnye (chief registrar of cooperatives Imo state),
In essence, these elements are those things that have led to the identification of requirements and, as a result, to the organization of needs for the purpose of establishment.
Despite the circumstances that lead to the formation of cooperatives, many of these cooperative societies fail and break down, and this is due to a variety of factors.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
This academic exercise is meant to appraise the feasibility of the factors that can influence the establishment of cooperatives and the socio-economic standard of cooperatives member and its society at large in Owerri L.G.A Imo state. These factors are as follow;
a. To know how these factors has helped cooperatives its members and generally the public at large.
b. To know how these factors have led to the establishment of cooperatives in Owerri L.G.A.
c. To know the number of cooperatives that has failed in Owerri L.G.A.
d. To ascertain the number of cooperatives that are still in existence in Owerri L.G.A Imo state.
e. To ascertain the achievement of cooperatives in the economy of Owerri L.G.A, Imo state.
f. To bring foreword how much cooperatives has helped to reduce unemployment in Owerri L.G.A, Imo state
g. To find on the problems militating against the establishment of cooperatives in Owerri L.G.A, Imo state.
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Many countries or nations have benefited greatly from cooperatives. Cooperatives have played an important role in industries such as production, distribution, and even consumption in nations such as Krael, Denmark, Sweden, India, and the United Kingdom.
Many individuals will realize the relevance of cooperatives to human survival at the conclusion of this study. This includes the following: a. the federal, state, and municipal governments; b. the general public; c. the cooperative sector; and d. the general academics.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION
a. What are the factors that can influence the establishment of cooperatives in Imo state ?
b. In what ways can these factors really influence the establishment of cooperatives in Imo state?
c. Are these f actors negative or positive
d. What are those negative factors that can influence the establishment of cooperative in Imo state?
e. As a result of these factors, how many cooperatives are viable in Imo state
f. What are the likely causes that has led to their failure?
1.5 SCOPE OF STUDY
The study covers the extent of those factors that can influence the establishment of cooperative society in Imo state . It went further discussing the importance or objectives of the cooperatives in Imo state. Also the factors that led leads to their failure.
Further more the study covers an extent of cooperative that are viable and non viable societies in Imo state.
1.6 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
A lot of circumstances dismounted the extent of this research. One of the major circumstance is time which restricted the researchers from collecting and gathering materials from cooperative department (or in Road secretariat) Imo state. There was no time to collect other questionnaires sent out.
Secondly finance was another constraint that restricted movement from various cooperative offices.
Thirdly protocols in getting the right source to feed the researcher with useful information and details. I was striated from one area office to the other and from one zonal office to another and finally to the head quarters of cooperative department.
Finally my school programmes was another major constraint that compelled my movement to be timely and limited.
