ABSTRACT
The research investigated the problems militating against industrial development in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
The researcher will covered some local government Area of Edo state. So as to examine the concept of industrial development and also to identify the problems of industrial development in Oredo local government area of Edo state
The questionnaires were collected by the researcher immediately after they were answered by the respondents and were talent on the basis of percentage result were computed for the study. The result of the data analysis collected revealed t5he following problems of skilled and unskilled workers, shortage of capitals, transportation and communication system, and shortage of raw materials.
To reduce or eliminate these problems the following recommendations were made on how these problems mention above can be solved.
1) Government should pump out money to the desiring people through loans by the bank and ensure that money get to the rightful use.
2) There should be improvement of transport and communication system In Oredo local government area.
3) Government should improve on agricultural sectors for the increase in production of raw materials.
4) Government should encourage international trade between different countries so that these local products can be sold and exchanged with other goods.

INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Oredo local government area is one of the eighteen (18) local government areas of Edo state with headquarter in Benin City. Oredo Local Government Area is an urban centre.
Majority of the labour force in the local government engage in industries or business. These industries are facing some developmental problems.
Industrialization is the key to economic development in any country. For any country to attain any level of development, industrialization is put into consideration.
According to Iyoha (1989), in his own view said that “it is becoming increasingly accepted that industrialization is an effective means of bringing about rapid economic development in developing countries
The benefits derived from the various industries cannot be over emphasis, it is the pride of a nation to develop more industries in order to achieve maximum progress technologically.
The total dependence of foreign goods produced by foreign industries are detrimental to the incurred in the process and the whole economy would be experiencing societal backwardness.
Over the years Oredo local government area has been experiencing little or no progress industrially. It has not always favored. The development and progress of existing industries. But we may say that the reason might be politically inclined. Moreover, there is total dependence on subsistence farming by the populace who only produce for agricultural goods and neglect the industrial sector had been very much problematic.
Recently, both individuals, private and state are laboring immensely to develop industrial based I the local government. Also knowing the benefits the nation derived from industrialization has decided to increase its annual budget to the industrial sector in order to increase its progress.
However, Oredo local government of Edo state is blessed with natural resources which are the bedrock to industrialization. These natural resources most of which are not exploited. The raw materials imply the utilization of these raw materials and the employment of people of the local government Area which in turn will lead to industrial development with its attendant benefits.
STATEMENTS OF THE STUDY
Considering the benefits of establishing industries in communities, one wonder while these are few industries in Oredo local government area perhaps, the reason can be attributed to certain factors that make the industries to find difficult to innovates carryout research work, acquire new plants and machineries as well as capital for developing because of the following problems.
1) Shortage of capital
2) Shortage of certain raw materials
3) Political decision by government
4) Power supply
5) Inadequacy of markets for industrial goods
6) Problems of skilled and unskilled workers
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study is to investigate the problems facing industrial development in the area.
i) To find out how these problems have affected then growth and development of industries in Oredo local government area.
ii) To find out the possible solution to the problems of industrial development in Oredo local government.
iii) To find out if there is raw materials in the area
iv) To find out if there is adequate markets for industrial goods.
v) To determined if there are enough capital to setup industries.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study will be of great importance to the development of new industries in Oredo local government area. The study will contribute to the solution of some of the problems in the area and ensure that government take political decision to setup industries in the area.
It will be significant to the residence of the area to raise capital to setup industries because capital is necessary in the establishment of industries. The government should provide lasting solution to this menace in Edo state in general, and especially Oredo local government area and this will be of great benefits to the skilled and unskilled workers.
RESEARCH QUESTION
For the purpose of this study the researcher attempted to find out the validity of the following research questions.
1. To what extent does an inadequate market for industrial goods hinder industrial development?
2. To what extent is shortage of capital the problem of industrial development?
3. Is poor transportation facilities and communication system affecting industrial development?
4. Does shortage of raw materials in industrial development lead to low productivity of goods?
5.How does the problem of skilled and unskilled workers affect the development of industries?
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
It borders on the development of industries in Oredo local; government area of Edo state with special emphasis on the problems of industrial development in the area.
Many authors have written a lot on the problems facing industrial development of various industries but in different localities.
Whoever, few information can only be gathered because their studies where mostly on urban areas.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
i)INDUSTRY: Can be defined as the aggregate of firms producing economically, related to goods and services
ii)INDUSTRIALIZATION: Simple means growth in a country GDP with the wide use of machine in the production which in turn affects the social economics activities of the society.
iii)ECONOMICS: As a science, which studies human behavior as a relationship between ends and scarce means, which have alternative uses
iv)DEVELOPMENT: Is the process of increasing business, trade and industrial activity.
v)INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT: Is the process of increasing the knowledge, skills and capability of people in a society.
