ABSTRACT
The overall objective of this study was to examine the socio-economic implication of the Boko-Haram insurgence in Nigeria (2009-2013). In more specific terms, the objectives of this research work were to explore the genesis of terrorism in Nigeria, identify the efforts attempted by the federal government of Nigeria to quell the Boko-Haram insurgence. The last objective of this study was to examine the socioeconomic implications of the Boko-Haram insurgence in Nigeria
This research was literature-based and, therefore, descriptive. Basically, secondary data sources that was used in this research include relevant textbooks, magazines, library and archival materials, published and unpublished works, journals, newspapers, and internet materials all of which the researcher thoroughly explored for critical examination and analytical insight. The data collected was analyzed using content analysis.
This study found out that Boko Haram has become a threat to the entire nation. Their activities have crippled the socioeconomic life of the entire citizenry and the impact of the activities of the dreaded Boko Haram has brought physical, psychological and economic damage to Nigeria’s fragile economy. We also found out that there is a sharp drop in the commercial activities in the North as foreign investors are gradually diverting from Nigeria due to the increasing security crisis.
This study concluded that the increasing spread of nefarious activities of the Boko Haram sect in Nigeria and the destruction of lives and property is a serious issue that could not be dismissed with a wave of hand; it requires a very drastic and urgent attention and commitment on the part of government. We recommended that anybody linked with the sect should be made to face the law either he/she is a bigwig or not and the government should develop a strong political will to fight the scourge. Lastly, good governance and proper leadership should be entrenched to avert future occurrence.
